Salina parks update: Gerry Ivy splash pad open, dugout rebuilds and new scoreboard on the way

At the July 15 meeting Parks and Recreation staff reported multiple project updates across the park system, including the recent opening of a new splash pad and plans for dugout replacements and other facility improvements.
"We did open a new splash pad at Gerry Ivy Park early June," staff said, noting crews installed sod and removed temporary fencing after initial settling and a brief mud-related closure. Staff also said they will develop a winterization plan for the splash pad’s mechanical systems.
Staff reported a bid award for 2026 concrete improvements covering Oakdale Park, a trail at Indian Rock, and improvements between Earl Bondi Fields 1 and 2 at BFRA, with facility maintenance returning to field and dugout repairs when ball season ended. On dugouts specifically, staff said they are planning an "old school" sunken look with structural steel and a sump pump or drainage system to keep water from collecting.
Travis and other staff added that a replacement scoreboard moved from Dean Evans Stadium to Matson Field decades ago is being replaced with a new unit that is currently en route. The board heard that remaining shelterhouses and other small projects have long lead times and installations are planned over coming months.
