Salina parks report strong summer turnout; camps fill and tournaments return

City parks staff told the board that summer programs are at or near capacity: field house camp filled rapidly, the department hosted regional tournaments and reported high participation across youth camps and leagues.
At the July 15 advisory board meeting staff reported high summer participation across parks programs and successful hosting of regional tournaments.
"We filled all 8 weeks of camp," staff said, and Travis added that the field house summer camp registration surge occurred within hours of opening. Staff provided participation counts: 87 baseball/softball teams associated with spring tournaments and event hosting; tennis camp had about 24 participants; volleyball camp reported 103 participants; a softball fundamentals camp had 46 girls; a boys baseball camp had 37 attendees.
Staff credited strong turnout for making the city’s recent hosting of NAIA and KCAC events a success and said organizers have asked to return next year. Board members noted the operational strain from overlapping tournaments and summer programming but praised staff for managing schedules and facilities.
