Richard Goggins of the budget office reported to the Management Finance Committee that May 2026 sales tax collections totaled $24,200,000, a decrease of $220,000, or 0.9%, compared with May 2025. "So overall, sales tax collection for May 2026 totaled $24,200,000," Goggins said, and he clarified a charting error in the packet where a -0.9% figure should read -0.3% for a different comparison.
Goggins said year-to-date collections are $383,600 (0.3%) below the same period last year and $4,200,000 (3.3%) lower than the 2026 adopted budget. He noted a split between consistent and variable taxpayers: collections from consistent taxpayers grew about 1% compared with May 2025 and are $3,500,000 (3%) higher than a year ago, while variable-sales taxpayer collections fell about $445,000 (19.4%) versus May 2025 and are down roughly $3,900,000 year to date. At the sector level, eating-and-drinking establishments are up 5.3% and discount stores up 3.8%, while electronics, computers and industrial sales—sectors with larger shares of variable sales taxpayers—are underperforming and together are down about $6,000,000 to date.
