City staff presented Change Order #1 for the East 2nd/Edgewood and East 3rd Street reconstruction project and the council approved it by a 4-0 vote on July 24.
Ms. Holly Robertson said the change order totals $59,075 for quantity corrections and field changes: increasing water service reconnections from 9 to 11 (+$5,000), increasing fire hydrants from 3 to 8 (+$42,750), one unplanned service line relocation (+$5,825), and removal of a large tree not included in the original plan set (+$5,500). The original contract award to Kansas Heavy Construction was $5,191,817; the revised construction contract total is $5,250,892 and remains within the total approved project budget of $6,916,958.
When asked how five additional hydrants were missed in design, Ms. Robertson said she was unsure but suggested the original design assumed existing hydrants could be kept and those units turned out to be too old and required replacement. The Council approved the change order 4-0.
The change order documents an in-progress field adjustment; staff characterized the revisions as corrections and additions that keep the project within the previously approved budget.
