Board approves $822,120 lease-purchase for school devices

Board of Education IT Director Tom Kline and Business Manager Susan Russo presented a lease-purchase plan for student and staff computing devices and recommended leasing the high-school devices to consolidate the high-school fleet on a single device model and preserve uniform classroom experience. The board approved a resolution authorizing execution of a Lease Purchase Agreement and Payment Schedule not to exceed $822,120 for the equipment and services.
Kline said the plan intends to run student devices on a four-year replacement cycle at the high school and that Apple’s school warranty (AppleCare for schools) includes repair or replacement terms that are attractive for K–12 deployments. "So, the catch there ... is accidental damage or a manufacturer defect ... Apple will either repair or replace it twice a year for each year for the four years," Kline said, describing coverage differences from consumer warranties. Staff also said student data will continue to be stored in Google cloud services to preserve continuity if a device is repaired or replaced. The board approved the lease-purchase by unanimous vote.
