Board approves $76,969.67 suspense list for uncollectible taxes

The Board of Finance voted 6-0 to suspend $76,969.67 in delinquent motor vehicle, supplemental motor vehicle and personal property taxes the Collector of Revenue said are collectible in law but not worth further collection effort under normal procedures.
Collector of Revenue Usha Srivel presented a suspense list totaling $76,969.67 and explained the items include motor vehicle taxes ($41,005.85), supplemental motor vehicle taxes ($9,310.46) and personal property taxes ($26,653.36) that the office no longer deems worth pursuing through additional collection efforts such as DMV holds or other extraordinary measures. "The items that I'm presenting on the suspense list are considered collectible for a period of 15 years," Srivel said, describing reasons such as vehicle registration lapses, businesses closed with no recoverable assets, or debtors who have not provided forwarding addresses.
Board members discussed collection procedures and whether email or automated statements might improve collection rates; Srivel said the collector's office does not currently maintain an email list and that building such a database would be a significant effort for a two-person office. The board voted to approve the suspense list 6-0.
