Trustees spent a substantial portion of the July 13 meeting debating the board nd administration boundary on staffing and retention. The Chair proposed reframing the board's middle goal from "grow staffing and decrease turnover" into a governance aim to "support workforce stability" through policy, measurement and budget direction rather than micro-managing hires. "So it's not increased staffing and decreasing turnover. That's a management goal," the Chair said, urging the board to set policy and expectations while administration implements staffing plans.
Several trustees said they have not always seen the timeline or materials about staffing decisions in time to provide meaningful oversight. Miss Lopez said an 11-month high-school schedule rollout was handled behind the scenes and that trustees learned of it only months later, asking, "How much impact did this board actually have on that?" The board discussed using committees and focused work groups to ensure trustees get the data and opportunities to influence strategy without taking over operational hiring decisions.
