Pur Angels asks Yreka for spay/neuter funding after 20 years of free clinics

Jan Sinnott, director of the volunteer nonprofit Pur Angels, told the Yreka City Council the group has run free clinics in Siskiyou County since 2006 and has “spayed and neutered over 7,200 cats and kittens.” Sinnott said Pur Angels aims to perform 40–50 surgeries per month and that the minimal monthly cost to reach that target is about $2,000 for supplies and vaccines.
Sinnott described the operation as all-volunteer and unique in the county: “Purangels is the only clinic in Siskiyou County that’s dedicated to the spay and neuter of feral cats,” she said, and noted the group does not charge fees for most of its services. She told council members that local feeders and volunteers trap and monitor colonies, then bring animals to the clinic for surgery, vaccination and, when possible, rehoming. Sinnott also said a community volunteer recently trapped more than 200 cats over two years in Yreka neighborhoods, reducing visible kitten populations in those areas.
Council members asked procedural and funding questions but did not take action on a grant request at the meeting. The city clerk opened public comment and later the council continued with the agenda. Staff and councilors suggested that Pur Angels and staff could follow up about specific funding options; no formal city appropriation was approved at this session.
