Town staff described the scope of a study to reimagine Old Lancaster Road and Lakeside Avenue with an emphasis on providing a pedestrian connection under the rail bridge. The planning commission prioritized three alternatives — each including a one‑lane solution under the bridge — plus a do‑nothing scenario; staff said they will project 20‑year future traffic and carry forward those three alternatives and the no‑build option for further analysis.
The presenter said the one‑lane underpass approach would allow space to be repurposed for pedestrian use and possibly parking and wider sidewalks on adjacent blocks. “All options involve sort of that one‑lane scenario with the bridge that we can get pedestrians,” the planner said. Board members asked about fire‑company access and possible signalization at nearby intersections; a fire representative asked staff to consult emergency responders if any alternative would change critical travel routes.
