Commissioners press SRP on screening and aesthetics as part of Aurora Solar expansion

Several Florence commissioners raised aesthetics and mitigation as the commission considered SRP’s PUD amendment on July 16. Vice Chair DeRosa described the existing solar field seen from Attaway Road as "visual blight," saying nearby residents face an unacceptable view. Commissioners asked whether the town could require walls or other screening and whether the commission would retain any authority to weigh aesthetics.

SRP representatives acknowledged the concerns. "For the area that's in front of you tonight, we are working with the staff to make sure that those have walls and they're screened appropriately and consistent with town code," Rhys Anderson said. Community development staff and the applicant clarified that recent state law changes have shifted many discretionary aesthetic decisions to administrative staff during design review; the commission's role on this amendment was limited to the PUD boundary and the height modification. Commissioners warned they were reluctant to approve a higher height without seeing sample building designs, but the motion to continue for more information failed and the commission recommended approval with staff conditions.
