Task force urges an "open house" model for fall meeting; board weighs options for public questions

Task force members briefed the board on two central questions that guided their report: how to design a fall kickoff meeting to better educate and engage residents, and how to accommodate public questions in a process that now uses Australian ballot for final decisions. The presenters described four options — integrate public questions into the kickoff, schedule a full-day Saturday format, hold a separate public-questions session, or pursue a charter change for a different cycle — and recommended piloting an "open house" (tabling/stations) format in October to bring residents into the budget conversation without using the moderated meeting model.

Task force members emphasized the role of clear warnings, better wording of meeting articles, and improved liaison/communication between staff, the task force and the selectboard. "We laid out... the two big questions of the four areas and then we can go," one task force speaker said, stressing coordination. Board members raised concerns about preserving direct democracy and whether large items should remain on the Australian ballot; both the board and task force supported better communications, a possible role transition for the task force, and a short planning timeline so the fall event can be scheduled and staffed.
