CRA directs staff to study Channelside north–south linear park and report back Sept. 10
Summary
After debate over protecting the maritime working waterfront versus creating a Channelside riverwalk, the board voted to ask staff to coordinate a North–South linear park/mobility vision and report to the CRA on Sept. 10.
Board members spent an extended portion of the meeting debating a proposed Channelside riverwalk and how it should balance public park space with the working port’s maritime uses. Supporters argued a linear park and mobility connection would knit Channelside to nearby districts and provide much-needed green space; opponents warned that waterfront development could displace maritime jobs and conflict with the port master plan.
After robust discussion, the board approved a motion directing staff to coordinate with CRA board members on a vision for a north–south linear park/mobility project through Channelside and to report back at the Sept. 10 meeting. Board member Clendenin moved the directive and the motion passed on a voice vote: "I will make a motion to direct staff to coordinate with CRA board members about vision of a North South Linear park slash mobility project through Channelside, and then report back to the CRA board at the September 10 meeting," a member told the dais.
