Council approves two new patrol vehicles and a handheld narcotics analyzer for the police department

Interim Chief Robert Walker presented quotes for two replacement patrol vehicles and recommended two 2026 Ford Police Interceptors from Superior Emergency Response Vehicles, citing better gas mileage, lower maintenance, local serviceability and interior space for officers. Walker said total funding requested for the two vehicles is recorded on the meeting record as $130,157.02 and that roughly $125,034.74 would remain in the capital equipment account after purchase.
On narcotics safety, Walker described a TrueNarc/Thermo Scientific handheld narcotic analyzer that lets officers test substances without opening packages, reducing accidental fentanyl exposure. He said the device price is $35,120.59 and that the city's opioid-settlement fund balance on the record ($48,831) could cover the purchase; the fund would be left with approximately $13,710.41 after procurement. "It actually analyzes narcotics so the officer doesn't have to take it out of the bag that it's packaged in," Walker said.
Both purchases were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. The police department will proceed with ordering the vehicles and analyzer and complete training for up to 12 officers on the analyzer.
