Port of Astoria to replace failing marina piles after board approves modified grant

The Oregon State Marine Board authorized modified funding for Facility Grant 1738 after Port of Astoria deputy director Matt McGrath reported lower-than-expected construction bids. McGrath told the board the port initially estimated about $340,000 in costs, but recent bids came in around $250,950, allowing the port and staff to recommend a reduced award. Janine Lehi explained the project will replace many thin, failing guide piles and install larger piles (up to 18-inch and drive depths up to 50 feet) to stabilize docks and a fuel dock.
Board members praised the port for returning a lower request and discussed contingency funds and whether the approved amount could be increased without a formal amendment if needed. The board approved the staff recommendation as modified (reduced by $44,525) and authorized the project to proceed. McGrath said the contractor is lined up and the port expects to complete the November work window between November 1 and November 30.
