City staff summarized the city’s 27-year proactive sewer maintenance program, noting a reduction from a historic 12–15 sewer backups per year to about one or two due to consistent cleaning. Staff said this year’s budget was increased by $5,000 to allow cleaning of approximately 17,000 linear feet, which staff estimates will allow the city to clean the full system on a five-year rotation. Because few companies provide sewer maintenance, Mayer Specialty Services of Goddard, KS, which has historically performed the work, was recommended for a contract not to exceed the budgeted $15,000.
Councilmember Kirsten Bruce moved to approve the Mayer Specialty Services contract and Councilmember Andrew Smith seconded; the motion passed 6-0 by roll call vote. Staff said work will be planned annually to fit within the budgeted amount and will target known problem areas first.
