The council voted to appoint Kathy Roberts to the Tree Board after a motion and second. Roberts described her background and interest in trees and conservation, saying she wanted to be of service locally. "I wanted to be of service in some way," Roberts said when introduced.
Tree Board members reported a $4,700 expense to remove a large red oak that fell in the English Cemetery and explained two grant efforts: a federal community-tree grant (no local match) for roughly $27,000 that would reimburse quarterly, and a state demonstration-city grant for about $8,000 that requires a 50/50 local match (the board reported $4,000 in promised contributions and substantial in-kind hours valued in their estimates). The board plans a grant-writing workshop on Sept. 10 to help local applicants and will submit the demonstration grant promptly.
