Marion council approves USDA loan for $1,018,000 fire truck; ambulance arrives

The Town Council of Marion on April 6 adopted a USDA loan resolution to fund a new fire truck at the stated amount of $1,018,000. The resolution passed by a 7-0 vote after Town Manager Andrew Keen reviewed the financing details.
Fire/EMS Chief Rusty Hamm reported the department logged 211 calls in February, with about 43% of calls occurring in Smyth County and 56% within town limits. Chief Hamm said the new ambulance has arrived and the new engine has completed build and will be delivered from Roanoke for final inspection in the coming weeks. "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve this town for almost 25 years," Hamm said as he noted the equipment updates.
Keen provided cost context during the staff report, also noting the new fire truck purchase price was just over $1,000,000 and the ambulance approximately $350,000. Council adopted the USDA Loan Resolution at the stated amount of $1,018,000 (motion Dr. Jim Gates; second Suzanne Jennings; vote 7 AYES, 0 NOES). The purchase and financing are expected to move forward pending standard next-step administrative procedures.
