Darryl Chapelle, founder and CEO of the Darryl Chapelle Foundation, presented a grantee highlight to the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities, describing a digital showcase funded through the agency’s FY26 small-cap program. He said the foundation has awarded about $140,000 to roughly 100 artists since 2019 and that the DC open call, held February–April, produced approximately 5,000 users and 1,519 website visits.
"Through your funding…we received over 5,000 actual users during this open call period," Chapelle told the commission. He said four District artists were selected to receive $500 honoraria and six months of featured placement on the foundation’s digital showcase. Brody, a contracted collaborator and artist who led outreach and design, described targeted outreach to HBCUs, printed flyers with QR codes, and social-media amplification as key drivers of applicant and audience engagement.
CAH commissioners thanked the presenters and noted the agency’s interest in elevating digital access for artists with limited exhibition opportunities. Chapelle asked the commission to continue supporting youth-centered creative development and mental-health programming at the national level; staff noted the commission’s ongoing participation in related national funder forums.
