Craven County to roll over $337,400 for nature park work and seeks coastal grant for dock repairs

Mark Seymour, director of Recreation and Parks, described two ongoing capital projects and asked the board to approve rolling forward funding into the next fiscal year.
Seymour said the county will continue construction of a 176-acre nature park (parking, utilities, restrooms, dock and kayak launch) and requested rollover funding including "shelter construction, $34,000; dock construction, $31,000; trail work, $88,000; site work, $164,400" totaling a $337,400 budget amendment to be rolled into FY27. He also noted $20,000 for safety netting at West Craven Park fields and said those projects are expected to complete in 2027.
Seymour additionally reported a successful pre-application for the North Carolina Public Beach and Coastal Waterfront Access grant to repair a 2,000-foot dock at Latham Whitehurst Nature Park; "If awarded, it will cover 75% of the repair cost with the remaining 25% to be funded by Craven County," he said. The final application is due July 31 and award notifications are expected in September or October 2026.
The board voted to approve the requested rollover budget amendment and authorized staff to submit the coastal grant application; staff will return with award details if the grant is received.
