FAA grants fund taxiway design and aerospace apron work at county airport

Andrew Shorter (airport presenter) briefed the board on two FAA-backed funding actions: a design grant to finish taxiway and Williams Road realignment design work and a separate Airport Improvement Grant of $1,345,745 for apron and taxi-lane construction in the county's aerospace development area.
Shorter noted the Williams Road work will complete environmental and design steps so the county can later bid construction, and that the apron project covers about 3.05 acres of 18-inch-thick concrete designed for medium-sized aircraft. He said the county has already invested roughly $15.7 million in clearing, roads, sewer and water to ready 55 leased acres for aerospace businesses and expects vertical construction soon.
Commissioners moved to accept and authorize necessary signings for two grants; the motion passed on a roll-call vote. Shorter said the grants were coordinated with state and federal partners and that next steps will include completing 100% design and moving toward construction over the next two years.
The board's approval authorizes staff to finalize documentation and return with subsequent grant acceptances as design work progresses.
