Council hears multiple grant updates including $1M congressional request and REI funding opportunity

Among items reported were two grant submissions, a request for a $1,000,000 congressional-directed spending allocation for water-plant restoration (the town used a $2.5M projection from a consultant for planning), and an REI private grant opportunity that could provide approximately $24,000 for short-term recreational projects to support events such as the Christmas market.
"The maximum was 1000000, so I asked for 1000000," a staff member said about the congressional spending request toward the water-plant restoration. Another presenter described the REI grant as a private pool of funds that requires quick deliverables and could help fund free community ice-skating if awarded. The watershed planning grant (NRCS) was reported as unfrozen with Gannett Fleming selected to prepare planning and environmental-assessment work for flood-risk reduction; the figure $612,000 was referenced for that grant.
Why it matters: grant awards could underwrite major capital improvements (water-plant restoration), support tourism programming and events, and fund watershed planning and flood mitigation. Staff will continue to pursue these opportunities and report back on any awards.
