EDA committee seeks economic impact analysis to guide Taconite Harbor recommendations

Board members reported their Taconite Harbor advisory committee has started outreach to regional stakeholders and discussed next steps to translate the Stantec plan into quantifiable economic impacts. Commissioners said they would like an economic‑impact analysis that estimates costs, tax revenues, lodging and sales tax implications and opportunity costs to help prioritize interventions.
Commissioner (speaker 2) said he has reached out to the University of Minnesota Extension to explore whether economists there could use Stantec’s plan materials and community feedback to produce a workable impact analysis. The committee will seek grant resources to pay for a commissioned study if local partners agree. Staff also reported the committee will keep coordinating stakeholder meetings and regional outreach.
