Council approves Water Fund amendment after budgeting error discovered

The Lindsborg City Council on Dec. 16 approved an amendment to the 2024 Water Fund budget after a Finance Department keying error left the commodities line underbudgeted by $90,000.
Finance Director David Hay told the council the commodities line had been entered as $10,000 when it should have been $100,000 and that a Cash Forward amount had not been recorded, which could have caused the City to exceed budget authority without an amendment. Mayor Clark Shultz recessed the regular meeting at 6:34 p.m. to open the Budget Amendment Hearing.
Councilmember Andrew Smith moved to approve the amended 2024 Water Fund Budget; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Blaine Heble and passed with five ayes and one abstention from Council President Corey Peterson. Smith then moved to close the budget hearing; that motion passed 7-0.
The action corrects the City’s official 2024 accounts and authorizes use of unencumbered cash if needed for rising costs during the fiscal year.
