Siuslaw board hears CTE natural-resources program update highlighting hands-on training and industry partnerships

Amy Trigoni, the high-school natural-resources instructor, told the board the program launched last year and now offers intro, intermediate and advanced coursework, with new advanced classes planned for next year including wildfire management. "These classes are really important. It's really good to get the kids out of the classroom, and it is piquing kids' interest in finding other careers," Trigoni said.
Trigoni described partnerships with Lane Community College (LCC), Lane ESD, the Department of Forestry, BLM, local fire agencies and organizations such as Trailkeepers of Oregon and 3 Rivers Foundation. She said grants paid for drones and firefighting gear and allowed students to attend industry events and competitions; about 150 students took classes across both semesters last year, and the program is on track for similar or higher participation this year. Directors praised the program for work-based learning and career development, and asked about enrollment and certification plans for equipment operators; Trigoni said certifications are in development with FNRL and community partners.
