Laurel Middle School teacher William Curtis praises teaching, community involvement

William Curtis, a science teacher at Laurel Middle School, told school officials during the public comment period that he has taught for 42 years and remains driven by his students' outcomes.

"Who stays in a profession for 42 years? That's crazy. It's insane. But I do because I love teaching," Curtis said, describing the variety and purpose he finds in classroom work.

Curtis gave examples of former pupils who pursued careers he sees as evidence of teaching’s long-term impact: one is now a family doctor, another runs his own business, and others work in trades such as mechanics and landscaping. He said those encounters — former students returning to share how a teacher's comment mattered — keep him committed to the classroom.

Curtis also described recent recognition and his community involvement. He said a student nominated him and that "Channel 47 came and surprised me" as a teacher who makes a difference. He told officials he has participated in school and community events, attends athletic games and parades, and has been a member of First Baptist Church for 40 years.

To help students directly, Curtis said he partners with local retailers, including Target and 5 Below, to bring materials and supplies into the classroom as a way to give back. He emphasized that community involvement, both inside and outside school, is central to his role as a teacher.
