BrightSpeed plans 7-mile fiber upgrade to reach about 500 Altamont homes

John Idoux of BrightSpeed informed the council that BrightSpeed plans to upgrade its Altamont network from copper to fiber. Idoux said the project would involve about seven miles of fiber and would pass roughly 500 homes; he estimated about a month or less of active construction time where crews can over-lash fiber onto existing copper lines.
Councilmember Lyle Sykes asked about the construction timeline; Idoux said he was thinking construction would start late 2024 or early 2025. City Attorney Robert Myers is working on franchise-fee agreements, which the council tabled for further review.
The company said initial construction strategy is to over-lash fiber onto existing copper where possible to speed deployment. City staff and the attorney will continue negotiating franchise and fee terms before a final agreement is presented to the council.
