Altamont wins $1.53 million KDOT grant for sidewalks to school and food retail

Altamont will receive $1,528,469 from the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program to build pedestrian connections aimed at linking schools and food retail, City Clerk Heather Beasley told the council on Oct. 24.
The award is targeted for fiscal year 2026; Beasley said she has been working with KDOT on the necessary paperwork. The funding is intended to improve sidewalks and pedestrian safety on routes connecting the school and food retail locations in town. City staff did not provide a construction schedule at the meeting and said further design and coordination with KDOT will be required before work begins.
The project decision follows routine agenda business; the council did not take a separate roll-call vote recorded in the minutes on the award notification. City staff noted the Transportation Alternatives Program award amount ($1,528,469) and the fiscal-year target during the report. The next steps are paperwork and project coordination with KDOT ahead of design and procurement.
