City and public-safety reports: public works, fire grants, police activity and upcoming events
Summary
City staff reported street paving work, utility maintenance, multiple volunteer fire grants and police activity; the council also announced community events including a circus on Sept. 16 and a Veteran’s Memorial penny auction on Sept. 21.
City Administrator LeaAnn Myers told the council Labette County Public Works asphalted several local streets and that turf was laid at Lansdowne Garden. Utility Superintendent Brad Myers reported multiple maintenance activities including replacing a corroded gas yard line at 809 Huston and installing water and gas taps; the utility department is also preparing roads for asphalt work.
Fire and township reports noted award of KFS Volunteer Firefighter Assistance Grants for battery-operated saws, blowers and tower lights; several items have been ordered or purchased. Chief Michael Shields reported police activity including warnings and six citations for traffic infractions, two accident reports and follow-up with juvenile court on student incidents. The council also publicized community events: Culpepper & Merriweather Circus on Sept. 16 at McMillen Park, a Veterans Memorial penny auction Sept. 21, citywide rummage sales Sept. 28 and bulk trash collection Sept. 30–Oct. 2.
