Committee backs bill to create Mississippi Postsecondary Attainment Council (Impact)

Lawmakers moved to repeal the Education Achievement Council and create a 25-member Mississippi Postsecondary Attainment Council (Impact) to set statewide attainment goals and coordinate education–workforce strategies; the measure was advanced by voice vote and would take effect in July.
The chair presented legislation to replace the existing Education Achievement Council with the Mississippi Postsecondary Attainment Council, dubbed Impact, saying the state is "data rich but insight poor" and needs a dedicated body to convert information into action. The chair said the council would include 25 voting members drawn from academic sectors, community colleges, IHL representatives, private-sector workforce bodies, and legislative committee chairs.
Sponsors said the council would work with the Office of Workforce Development and ask agencies including IHL, the community-college board and SLDS to assist. The chair said the council would establish postsecondary-attainment goals, focus on adult learners, and take effect in July; the committee moved the bill forward by voice vote.
