MCPS told the Education and Culture Committee on July 25 that it will deploy a multi-tiered communications plan and targeted safety measures to accompany the new cellphone regulation and other behavioral policies.
Peter Moran described pre-service training for principals and staff, first-week student videos, school town halls, district-wide FAQs translated into multiple languages, and social-media graphics to be distributed ahead of the Aug. 26 start. "Principals then sending out, this is what we covered today and during town halls," Moran said.
Councilmembers pressed MCPS on emergency communications and parental access to students during an incident. Staff said improved systemwide emergency messaging and school-specific cultures can reduce the need for parents to contact students directly; central office or school staff can relay urgent messages to students in real time. The committee also raised bathroom safety and vaping issues; Morris staff said sensors tied to security staff iPads will alert teams to noise or vaping incidents and that bathrooms will remain open this school year while schools deploy targeted monitoring.
