MCPS developing AI guidance for teachers and students; draft regulation due this fall

Montgomery County Public Schools officials told the committee they are offering artificial-intelligence-focused professional development for educators this summer and are developing guidance and a regulation on AI use in classrooms to be shared later this fall.
"We are currently updating one of our policies, and we will have a regulation for the artificial intelligence that we are working on that will be further shared out later this fall," Kimberly Fields told the committee. She described summer modules (webinars and asynchronous content) created by MCPS's Department of Educational Technology with the Teaching & Learning office and said the district is evaluating AI-driven instructional tools as pilots.
Councilmembers asked whether MCPS will recommend detection tools for teachers, how the tools will respect student privacy, and how guidance will be communicated. Fields said the district is vetting detection systems for privacy and accuracy and wants to avoid adding undue teacher workload; she said MCPS will work with curriculum teams and gather student and expert input to create age-appropriate lessons and expectations. Committee members urged transparency on the materials being provided to teachers and recommended sharing modules with parents.
