MCPS cites inspector-general findings, adds device repair funding amid rising breakage

Montgomery County Public Schools officials told council members on July 25 that MCPS is working to address issues identified in an inspector-general report on Chromebook inventory management and is increasing repair and replacement tracking.
"We are working through the issues that were identified, to be able to fix what needs to be fixed as we go through this current fiscal school year," said Kimberly Fields. Staff noted a recent $800,000 increase in FY2023 tied to device aging and parts costs and said FY2025 includes $3,160,218 for Chromebook repair and for setting up the new Division of Technology Services.
Fields and other staff described rising replacement-part costs and said the district will improve tracking of breakage, refresh cycles, and replacement parts. They also said the district will work with schools to reduce student damage rates through school-level maintenance practices and more consistent inventory controls. MCPS indicated it will meet with the Office of the Inspector General at the end of August and expects to provide further updates in early fall.
