MCPS highlights teacher training, IXL and cluster teams as key strategies to boost student learning

MCPS staff described concrete interventions they expect to scale in the coming year to accelerate student learning. Keisha Logan, director of curriculum development and instruction, said professional learning is focused on "knowing the mathematics" so teachers can anticipate multiple student approaches and deliver conceptually rigorous instruction.
"We want our teachers to deeply know the math so that they're very confident when they go in and can anticipate all of the different ways that our students may approach solving those mathematics concepts," Logan said. She described summer and fall professional learning for both new and returning teachers, curriculum study sessions, and in-class coaching.
Logan said IXL, a personalized practice platform, has been especially helpful at middle school: "It's a platform that students have access to at home and that our teachers can use in the classroom...and it's individualized to where students are." MCPS also cited Math 180 and tiered MTSS supports for students needing more targeted intervention.
Dr. Addison added that MCPS will use program evaluation and an academic return-on-investment framework to identify which initiatives should be expanded or sun-set. The district plans to connect program evaluations to budget discussions and present an approved research agenda to the Board of Education in the fall.
