County officials raise alarm after local paper reduces print schedule; seek statutory fix for public notices

County administration notified the board that the McLeod County Chronicle will publish two print issues per month (the 1st and 3rd Fridays) beginning in July. Sheila (county administration) told the board that the Chronicle "will only publish 2 print issues per month" but that the paper's online edition will continue to publish weekly; she and other staff said the county is assessing how that change affects statutory public-notice requirements.
Mark said the statute currently does not differentiate between print and online publication and the county's position is to seek an amendment that would allow posting official notices on the county website. Sheila said she will meet with the county lobbyist and press the issue as a legislative priority; the county also said it will continue to post notices on the front door of the Government Center and will keep standard mail notifications to property owners. Commissioners expressed concern about access to notices when there is no print edition in the county and confirmed staff are taking steps to ensure legal posting requirements are met while pursuing legislative change.
