Residents back ‘Alternative 2’ for Woods Drive: 11‑foot lanes, 5‑foot shoulders, no shared path

The Silver Spring Township Board of Supervisors on June 30 reviewed proposed improvements to Woods Drive after Township Engineer Jonathan Robinson provided a project recap and compared two design alternatives. Robinson outlined safety concerns, property impacts and environmental considerations as part of a detailed presentation to the board and attendees.
Robinson described the option residents favored as "Alternative 2," which specifies 11-foot travel lanes, a 5-foot road shoulder and no shared-use path, for a total road width of 31 feet. Residents in attendance, who spoke during the public-input portion of the presentation, said they overwhelmingly prefer a road shoulder rather than a traditional sidewalk because of property impacts and neighborhood character concerns.
The presentation also covered proposed stormwater improvements along the corridor and included a diagram highlighting specific properties that would be modified under the proposed design. Robinson and HRG engineers outlined how the stormwater work would be coordinated with the roadway geometry to manage runoff.
Vice Chair Laura Brown opened the special meeting at 6:30 p.m. and staff noted that HRG’s presentation and a set of frequently asked questions are posted on the township’s website for public review. Township officials said the design will be refined based on public feedback and that additional public meetings will be scheduled.
