Principals present needs assessment: literacy gaps, behavior supports and targeted instructional materials

Building leaders from across the district presented highlights of their needs assessments and suggested actions the district may take to address learning gaps.
Adrienne Carpenter (speaker 2), an elementary principal, said last year was the first implementing a new curriculum and emphasized honoring the behavior task force's work while aligning supports to classroom needs. Laurie Adams (speaker 16), Atchison Middle School principal, said the school will continue investments in behavior intervention and tiered character/SEL programming and named specific professional-development priorities.
Lindsey Hanson (speaker 13), principal at Central, described academic barriers: roughly 9 percent of students enter Central two or more grade levels behind, with notable chronic absenteeism and high special-education enrollment; the school proposed targeted tiered interventions including a bridge-to-algebra program. Charlie Silly (speaker 18), interim high-school principal, urged improved course alignments and formative-assessment systems to catch learning gaps during instructional cycles.
District leadership summarized the presentations and said the needs-assessment findings will feed the budget process and guide prioritized purchases of instructional materials and personalized professional development.
