Historic and Design Review Commission recommends renaming Cesar Chavez Boulevard to Durango Boulevard

Clayton Wallace of Development Services told the commission the proposal would rename Cesar Chavez Boulevard to Durango Boulevard, a corridor that runs from Southwest 36th Street (Council District 6) to South Hackberry Street (Council District 2). He said about 295 addresses would change, 412 property owners had been notified and estimated implementation costs near $305,000 to cover application, notifications and new signage.
Commissioner Velasquez spoke against the recommendation during discussion, saying he would not support the motion. He argued the original Cesar Chavez naming reflected an effort to elevate Mexican American contributions and suggested the city instead consider honoring Mexican American figures such as Hector P. Garcia or Gus Garcia. "I won't be supporting the motion," he said. After debate the commission held a roll-call vote and the motion carried; the item will proceed to Planning Commission and tentatively to City Council for final action.
