Resident urges action on Green Street speeds as 96-unit project advances

Kevin Brewer, a Green Street resident, told the Select Board on July 14 that vehicles routinely travel well above the 25 mph limit through the village and asked the town to pursue both technical studies and low-cost traffic-calming demonstrations. "If people can't slow down to go that 25 miles an hour through there, you shouldn't be going through there," Brewer said, urging the board to reach out to the Androscoggin Transportation Resource Center and the MaineDOT about options including speed tables and temporary demonstrations.
The board discussed enforcement and engineering options and directed the town manager to contact ATRC and DOT and to consult with the police about targeted patrols and data collection. Members said they would also look into moving or deploying the town's speed-display trailer and asked staff to request a list of viable traffic-calming measures and associated timelines. Brewer and other residents said the proposed 96-unit apartment project nearby increases urgency to act; board members said planning-board processes and any required traffic studies for new developments would proceed on their own schedule.
