Committee sends Safe Lodging Partnership task force proposal to public safety amid budget questions

The governance committee voted to refer a proposed Safe Lodging Partnership task force to the public safety committee for evaluation after staff outlined the CCR's intent and councilmembers raised questions about funding.
A staff presenter summarized the CCR's goals: explore partnerships with motels and extended-stay operators in areas with high 911 and 311 calls, consider evidence-based pilot programs, develop metrics for success and perform equity and community-impact assessments. "What we are proposing is that this CCR be moved forward to our public safety committee to give us time for staff to evaluate what other cities in the country are doing and provide some recommendations," the presenter said.
Councilmembers welcomed the idea but repeatedly raised concerns about who would pay for pilot incentives and safety improvements. One councilmember said small businesses and motel owners may lack resources to implement recommended changes without incentives; another noted past programs and the city's 'good neighbor' and apartment-complex programs as possible models staff could build on. Staff and members agreed the public safety committee (scheduled for August) would begin the evaluation and the full scope and any budget implications would be clarified there.
The committee voted to send the CCR to public safety with the noted considerations.
