Council authorizes start of review to name stretch of North Main Avenue for Erica (Bridal) Andrews

The San Antonio governance committee voted to begin the formal review of a memorial designation that would name a section of North Main Avenue 'Bridal Andrews Memorial Way.'
Amin Thomas, director of development services, presented a CCR from District 1 proposing the designation to honor Erica Andrews for contributions to the local queer community. Thomas described the proposed location as North Main Avenue between East Cypress Street and East Ashbury's Place and recommended the city begin standard review steps — technical reviews, public meetings and consideration by the historic and design review commission, planning commission and city council.
Councilmembers asked whether memorial designations always need to come through a council consideration request and whether the process could be streamlined; one councilmember requested a checklist users could follow to reduce repetitive governance reviews. Staff confirmed the CCR process is the current origin for street memorial designations but said the charter and ordinance allow for flexibility if the council wants to change practice.
Staff also noted letters of support from Equality Texas and Pride Center San Antonio and recorded an individual named Daniel Pacheco for the record. Following discussion, the committee approved starting the review process.
