Governance committee approves minutes and forwards three items for further review

The San Antonio governance committee approved the meeting minutes and took formal next steps on three council-initiated items at its June 17 meeting.

The committee voted to refer a proposed large-area rezoning for the Stonebridge neighborhood to staff for analysis and appropriate plan amendments. Amin Thomas, director of development services, told the committee the rezoning request, submitted by District 10, would be processed in two phases to realign zoning with existing duplex uses and bring nonconforming land uses into conformance with appropriate zoning. "The main reason for this is to realign the zoning with the existing use of the property," Thomas said.

The committee also approved beginning the formal review process for a memorial designation to name a portion of North Main Avenue for Erica (called in the record "Bridal Andrews"). Staff noted letters of support from Equality Texas, Pride Center San Antonio and others. After questions about whether memorial designations always must come through a council-initiated request, members agreed to start the technical and public-review steps.

Finally, the committee voted to send a CCR proposing a Safe Lodging Partnership task force to the public safety committee for further study. Councilmembers and staff discussed timing and the potential budget implications of any future pilot programs; staff said a public safety committee meeting is scheduled in August to begin the work.
