Council forwards review to name stretch of North Main Avenue after Erika Andrews amid public objections

The San Antonio Junta de Gobierno voted June 17 to move forward with a formal review process to designate a portion of North Main Avenue between East Cypress Street and East AshB in honor of Erika Andrews. Staff said the request, submitted by District 1, included letters of support from local organizations and recommended technical review, public hearings and consultations with historic and design commissions before any final action.

Tomás Samín, director of the Department of Development Services, described the staff recommendation: “Nuestra recomendación es empezar el proceso de revisión, donde se tiene revisión técnica, juntas públicas y tener la comisión de revisión histórica y de diseño y la comisión de planeación, y después entonces tener la revisión.” The motion to advance the designation for review passed by voice vote after councillors emphasized establishing a clear naming process and routing requests through existing review bodies.
