The Augusta Historic Preservation Commission unanimously approved COA 26-27 permitting a semicircular driveway and a new brick fence at 2318 Walton Way in the Somerville Historic District, subject to staff and Historic Augusta recommendations and engineering standards.
Todd Kennedy summarized the application, emphasizing that Historic Augusta recommended positioning the new brick fence behind the existing historic raised granite retaining wall to preserve a character-defining feature. Kennedy also read an engineering department letter dated 05/14/2025 that said a driveway permit cannot be granted until the HPC approval letter and a signed approved plan are provided; the letter identified the Augusta Engineering Department contact and said no outstanding engineering issues were found otherwise.
Applicant Brett Montroy stepped forward and said he was "happy to comply with all those" conditions. Commissioners moved to approve the COA with the staff conditions limiting wall height, requiring compliance with Historic Augusta recommendations, and ensuring the driveway and curb cut comply with Augusta engineering standards. The vote was unanimous among members present.
The approval is conditioned on the applicant meeting engineering and Historic Augusta recommendations before construction of the new curb cut and driveway.
