Committee orders clearer medication procedures for field trips and summer programs

Committee members spent substantial time on the district's medication-administration policy, proposing several clarifications for nurses and families. They recommended language to require that parents, guardians or a designated responsible adult deliver medications to the school nurse or building administrator, and asked that the policy make disposal and documentation procedures explicit so nurses can track unused medication and record disposals in medication logs.
Members also discussed glucagon delivery formats (injection versus tablets), whether extended-school-year programs require a new prescription or simply a reauthorization by date, and the placement of field-trip language within the policy. Adam was asked to verify state rules on medication reauthorization; the item will be routed to first read (August) with the nurses' edits incorporated.
