Crewe council gives preliminary support for local historic overlay district downtown

Staff presented a proposal for a local historic overlay district as part of downtown revitalization work and asked council for preliminary direction. The overlay would allow the town to set preservation and appearance standards for downtown properties and would support applications for state façade grants and other incentives.
"This would allow officials to have more control over the preservation and appearance of downtown," the town manager said when outlining the possible benefits of an overlay district. Council members agreed in principle and asked staff to coordinate with the town attorney and Planning Commission to draft the ordinance and process for public hearings.
