The Town Manager presented highlights from a three-day Hill Studio revitalization workshop and summarized outreach data used to shape recommendations. Staff reported 18 participating businesses during an October 2024 business engagement week that generated roughly 2,600 customer visits from 209 unique ZIP codes across 24 states. The presentation covered market assessment findings, retail capture data and design recommendations for downtown Crewe along the 460 corridor.
The consultant’s branding recommendations included a toned color palette, a primary/secondary/accent font system and a new submark for downtown tourism. The Town Manager read Hill Studio’s brand statement aloud: "We are Crewe, Virginia, established in 1888... Crewe is the hometown where memories are made and families thrive." Staff showed logo variants for the town office, downtown, airport and single-color applications for engraving and merchandise. The team also proposed railroad-themed lamp posts, wayfinding banners, alley murals and programming ideas such as a rebranded Chicken Festival and a classic-car show to draw visitors.
Staff said next steps include finalizing the plan and applying in spring for an approximately $1 million facade grant focused on street-visible improvements; Council will later set eligibility rules and decide whether to require owner match. Council members asked clarifying questions about grant matches and phasing; staff noted the grant is flexible and could fund facades, streetscape elements and signage depending on program rules.
