Council reviews lease for community garden; Crewe Cares to take draft to its board

Council reviewed a proposed lease that would allow Crewe Cares to establish a community garden on town land, with three candidate locations under consideration: the community center lot, the lot behind the VFW and a library-adjacent parcel. Crewe Cares representative Mike described a phased plan that would start with a modest number of raised beds and allow expansion into green, park-like space if interest grows. The council asked staff to change the proposed termination notice to 60 days and to schedule a public hearing at the next meeting before entering into the lease.

Mike told the council: “all that space won't be used right in the beginning… the reason for the space was for if it takes off and we get the interest that we think we're going to have that we have room to expand.” Staff confirmed that the draft lease (Exhibit A) shows the proposed garden location beside the library and that council action would require a public hearing and final approval at a future meeting. Council members raised concerns about possible vandalism and whether existing library cameras would cover the garden area; staff said police would monitor the site during patrols and that security details would be integrated into planning.
