The U.N. briefing said UNIFIL peacekeepers observed repeated drone activity and instances of firing near U.N. positions in Lebanon, including impacts recorded inside or close to U.N. positions, and that such actions endanger U.N. personnel.
"We reiterate that any action that endangers UN peacekeepers or that interferes with them implementing their mandate given to them by the Security Council, are unacceptable," spokesperson Stefan said. He added that UNIFIL facilitated 11 humanitarian missions this week in coordination with OCHA.
Stefan also flagged that the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, will visit Lebanon from July 26–27 to meet senior officials, civil society and U.N. colleagues. The spokesperson said Turk's visit will include meetings with national leaders and that human rights colleagues will provide additional information to the press.
The briefing noted ongoing ground activities in UNIFIL areas of operation and repeated incidents affecting freedom of movement; Stefan described the need to protect U.N. personnel and allow humanitarian movements.
