Urban forestry update: tree-planting event July 23 and plan to staff an urban forester in 2027 budget

Lily, staff lead on the urban forestry effort, reported that prerequisites for the urban-forestry plan are moving forward and that a tree-planting event is scheduled for July 23 at 9 a.m. She said she is drafting a scope of work and collecting RFP examples to support hiring an urban forester or contractor to begin the program.
Commissioners discussed how the role will be integrated into city operations, supervision and line-item budgeting. Lily said the city moved a resolution to repurpose the Landscape Trust Fund toward an Urban Forest Trust and that a budget line for 2027 is being pursued so the selected urban-forester contractor or hire can access funds to begin work once the position is established.
