Quitman schedules full-day Main Street sewer repair; detours to reroute traffic

City staff told the council they discovered a collapsed 8-inch sewer line running from the courthouse to Main Street and are planning a repair that will require closing part of 145/Main Street for a day. Preparatory work will begin Friday and crews expect to replace the damaged section on Saturday, with an estimated single-day closure if preparation goes according to plan.
Jonathan, the public-works lead, said small vehicles will be routed down Water Street and around via Church Street while larger trucks will be detoured around Railroad Avenue or Hickory Avenue depending on routing needs. He noted the county can supply two detour signs and staff will supplement signage; MDOT told staff no permit was required for the emergency repair. The council discussed surface restoration standards and plans to bed the road with clay gravel after the pipe replacement.
